I'm writing this review as my wife and I experience this place. First impressions: clean, warm, seats a bit dated looking but comfortable. Our waitress was immediately friendly and accommodating and she knew the menu well. My wife ordered the panko encrusted whitefish and I ordered the pork tenderloin. For an extra buck you can upgrade your dinner salad to any of the menu salads. We went for the mango fig salad. We also ordered crab cakes. The salad was sweet and savory and delicious with the nutty and peppery bite of arugula. I ate the whole thing but it could have benefitted from a little more acid like thinly sliced tart apples or pears. The crab cakes were the bomb with a side of red pepper aioli which gave the cakes a little kick. Well my pork tenderloin came as a generously decked out plate and was impressed at first bite. This dish tastes best when you eat the sweet pork withy the roasted potatoes together. The two favors meld into one happy palette. Also the roasted and nutty Brussels sprouts balanced out the sweetness of the pork. I ate them all and i don't even like brussels sprouts! My wife's white fish was light, not fishy and delicious with the lemon aioli and basil oil sauce. The breading was also light, crusty, and not oily. Overall we think the food is excellent, the staff warm and accomodating, and the prices reasonable. We'll be back.

Good food. Not so great service. We were vacationing up in Sturgeon Bay during the Fire & Ice festival, and we grabbed some lunch here. It was a typical Saturday. No wait for sitting, but our waitress only came to the table to take our order and that's it. She didn't come to check if our food was ok, My order was wrong and I wasn't able to tell her that at all. She didn't refill any of our drinks, it was highly disappointing.

Just had dinner here. We pick because it was the only place open and we had come it late from sightseeing. Our waiter, John, was excellent. He took good care of us and even ran 2 blocks down the street to return the jacket my husband forgot at our table. The food was delish and if I wasn't so tired we would have had dessert. Their dessert menu was very tempting. Glad we found this place.

A definite must-try. The mango fig salad(with goat cheese) is amazing....upgrade your dinner side salad to this! The half chicken melted in my husbands mouth and the gnocchi was perfection. Homemade carrot cake for dessert was fabulous. What a great place!

Great spot! The decor is'nt much but the food is spectacular! Our waitress Haley was attentive and made some nice suggestions, we will definitely return. Beer and wine only at this point.

It was an below average experience. I ordered cherry BBQ meat loaf which comes with a small house salad. Oh it is truly small with little greens amd a cherry tomato chopped in half...come on. The meat loaf was tender but the cherry BBQ sauce was way too sweet. I almost felt like i was having a dessert. My boy friend ordered BBQ chicken pizza and he said it was okay. Service was average. The server asked if the food was good when we only had the first bite. 10 minutes later she came to ask if we need any boxes but we were obviously still eating.

My meat loaf with cherry-based BBQ sauce was loud, fun and perfectly offset by nice, calm garlic mashed potatoes and you think you don't like rutabagas and turnips? You'd be wrong, and they go with this twist on comfort food really well! My wife's grilled flatbread with figs, arugula and goat cheese was equally and surprisingly delicious. And waitress Kathleen was phenomenal! Dessert - apple streusel and carrot cake - are on the way. Life is good!

Hard to review. Service was horrible. Our first waiter who was also the bartender took our drink orders. Then another waiter came and said the first waiter was "obviously overwhelmed" so he was taking over. Um, ok. There were only 4 tables filled and one couple at the bar. We waited too long for drinks. Had to ask twice for water. Salads finally came. Blue cheese was like water and Caesar was sooo garlicky. One salad had no croutons for some reason. Waited another 40 minutes for entrees--- not an exaggeration. No one came back for drink refills. Now this is why it's hard to review ... the food was really, really good. Some of the best fried shrimp we've ever had, huge shrimp and huge portion. Seafood carbonara was really good but strangely smokey as if cooked over a wood fire. Bacon bomb meatloaf must have been good because my friend didn't offer to share. If they fix the service and food turnaround issues this could be a great place.

Our experience at John Martin's was fine. Well, more like somewhat underwhelming. After checking into the Holiday Music Motel, we were told to go to John Martin's if we wanted a nice burger. It's never reassuring to walk into a restaurant on a Friday night and see it virtually empty at 8 pm. Our server and the hostess were quite nice. Our disappointment was the hamburger list on the menu looked great but we were told that the only hamburger in the evening was a kobe beef burger. We ordered one medium rare and the other medium well but they were both very rare. To be fair, we could have sent them back to be cooked more but honestly but we were SO hungry. My salad was fine, the vegetable manicotti dish was good and the sweet chili was good-I think the secret ingredients are cherries and pure sugar. Can't say I would recommend this place but wouldn't discourage people either.

This restaurant is an absolute must. The food is prepared with care and you know the chef (TJ) puts a lot of pride in his work. We're from Washington DC and this restaurant rivals any from this area. Would definitely go back. Do yourself a favor, go to this restaurant and ask for Haley for great service.

We were there on a Thursday evening. Granted, it was the day after the Fourth, but that doesn't excuse the poor service and the owner's indifferent behavior. The owner was sitting eating at the bar when we arrived. There was no hostess. He did not get up but told us (with his mouth full) that someone would be right with us. Three different servers told us the same thing, but we stood for quite some time before we elected to eat at the bar. We waited another ten minutes for drinks. The servers were clearly swamped and the owner spent most of the evening sitting at the bar eating. It was unappetizing and rude, and something I would never expect of a proprietor who cares about his employees or customers. The food was adequate and the staff were friendly and working feverishly. I will not go back, however. The owner of this establishment should take a lesson from successful restaurateurs who are attentive, considerate, enthusiastic, and hard-working, and who don't let their servers do all the heavy-lifting on a busy, hot night.

This is our new restaurant in Sturgeon Bay! Dinner last evening was just excellent and we'll definitely be back. Not the least expensive in town and don't expect huge portions, but the food is divine. . . from appetizers to desserts. UPDATE - Sorry to report that the last time we went here, two of us got sick, so won't be going back.

Stopped here for lunch on 5/27/14. We were the first ones in for lunch that day. Our waiter (Stephen??) was so attentive. I had a prime rib sandwich w/ the BEST sweet potatoes fries I've ever had. My husband had the grilled whitefish sandwich with an awesome salsa. Our waiter brought us some to-die-for bread to snack on while we waited for our meal. Wish all of them the best as it was the best meal we had in Sturgeon Bay!

My family just finished eating here. Decor is fine, very run-of-the-mill. Our waitress was kind, if not especially helpful. The food was absolutely sub-par. My fathers ribeye came out tough and cold, flatbread and salad was average, and my mothers fish was thin and tough. The worst was the shrimp cocktail - it came out with the veins and smelling foul. The waitress forgot a salad. Walking past the kitchen was especially offensive, as dishes were piled high and ingredients containers were strewn about haphazardly. Would absolutely not recommend.

We stopped by at 9:30 only to discover the kitchen closes at 9:00. We were tired from traveling and with our 90y mother. The manager re-opened the kitchen and the chef stayed to cook us a fabulous dinner. This would never happen in a bigger city and we were very appreciative. Our meal was excellent. They also accomodate Gluten free requests!!

  • Nancy W.

Perhaps they were short staffed and didn't inform us but the wait was really long to have water brought and our order taken. They had no apples for my mom's salad (it's apple season!) and the rest if our meals were just okay (chili and pesto gnocchi). The waitress was super cute with my son but other than that, we wouldn't go back.

I would say this is a must-try if you're visiting Sturgeon Bay. My husband and I went to John Martin's after having a completely horrible experience at Stone Harbor Pub (where we couldn't even consume our $25.00 seafood pasta and got little more than an apology from the staff). John Martin's seemed busy (it was a Sunday, but there were several graduation parties of large families), so we sat up at the bar where we were immediately greeted by a server and a manager. Both of whom were very friendly and inquired about where we were from and what we were doing in town. We hadn't planned to eat, but they suggested that we check out their menu and let them know if anything sounded good. We ordered a couple drinks, and then after reading through their appetizers we decided we had to try one! I can't remember the name of the app, but it was several kinds of cheese rolled in rice and fried. It was served with what they called "Tomato Jam (or jelly?)" which the chef makes in house. It was incredible. I honestly still think about these things...they were that good. After our app the manager let us select a dessert for free on account of our anniversary---which was exactly what we needed to end our anniversary trip! I can't remember the mangers name (I want to say it was Brenda, but the date was June 3rd), but she was absolutely incredible. She did a great job of making conversation with us and making us feel welcome---she told us all about the restaurant and definitely made us want to come back for an entire meal the next time we get to Door County. I'm from a small town---so I guess I just loved how she knew we weren't from there but seemed genuinely interested in knowing why we were there and if we were enjoying ourselves. Although I can't speak for the entire menu, what we had was amazing. The chef seemed really involved and although we were only there for about 90 minutes, we saw several of the kitchen staff come out into the restaurant to converse with patrons or have a look around the dining room to make sure people look satisfied. The interior has a good vide--great lighting, exposed brick. If you're in Sturgeon Bay don't miss this place!

We were at a weekend getaway in Algoma and heard about this new John Martins in Sturgeon Bay. We decided to give it a try. First impression walking in was it smelled fantastic. The wood floor and bar are warm and the decor is clean and contemporary. Lighting was subdued and the dining area is roomy with comfortable seating. People were casually dressed, dining and having drinks at the bar, there's some flat screen tvs showing sporting events but the volume was down and didn't distract. We were greeted by a nice waitress who seated us and as we walked to the table i noticed the fantastic large black and white photographs of historic scenes from the Sturgeon Bay area, surrounding the dining room - would have liked to take more time to see them all - next time! The chef, TJ, was talking with guests and made his way to our table and greeted us, we asked for suggestions. It was a tough choice, everything sounded so good! We started with the crab cakes which were moist, flavorful and delicious. Although the side-salad came with our entree, we were able to upgrade to one of the fantastic dinner salads for only a dollar more - the mago-fig salad was amazing! I ordered the New York strip steak with peppercorn demi-grace - it was perfectly prepared - garlic mashed potatoes were to-die-for and the roasted root veggies were a perfect side. The bottle of chianti was a perfect match and we finished off our fabulous gourmet meal with a chocolate caramel flan - wow, needless to say, i was stuffed and extremely satisfied. we are going to make this a usual stop for us on our trips to the door county area.

An absolute delight ... As a bartender and restaurant goer who has seen his fare share of good places to eat, this was right up there. The bar area is small, but quaint and welcoming. With only beer and wine, it's a great place to grab a good local brew (Hunterland Stout on tap) and browse their amazing menu. The dish I went with was a glazed meatloaf with a Door County cherry sauce over the top. AMAZING flavor, moist and succulent. The side of veggies was steamed, buttered lightly and were very colorful. The garlic mashed potatoes were Over The Top good. Light and airy and tasted like grandmas' ... For dessert I tasted a light pound cake layers with fresh cream and fruit topping. Absolutely fantastic stuff. The bartender, waitress and cook all addressed us, were polite and knowledgable. The fact that they were open on a Monday night in the off-season was taking a risk, but we're still talking about it days later. Our entire filming crew (of two) will definitely be back there again when we are in the area. Thank you to the entire staff for an amazing dining experience!

I recently visited here while seeing famliy in the area. An absolutley fantastic experience. We met relatives there after a long drive and were treated like famliy. I had the cherry meatloaf which was excellent. It was so good we went back the next night when I had a filet done to perfection. Service was good, food was great. This would be a top shelf restaurant in Chicago. The chef is TJ Samonds and he greeted us as well as other patrons in frequent visits to the dining room. A must visit in Door County!

We stopped in for lunch and were pleased with the food... nice selection and well prepared, but it was only lunch so I am avoiding grade inflation and sticking to 3 stars. But we will be heading back for dinner soon -- thyme-encrusted salmon sounds good. Gouda burger a nice variation on a theme and excellent, as was rigatoni with grilled shrimp. Portions were generous. Atmosphere is simple, neat and clean, wine list is adequate. They have been open just a few months and are still getting settled into the business. A great addition to a the restaurants in Sturgeon Bay.
